Surin is famously known as the City of Elephants due to the strong bond between the locals and elephants that has lasted for generations. One of the most significant festivals reflecting this relationship is the Surin Elephant Round-up, held annually in November. Visitors can witness spectacular elephant performances while learning about the lifestyle and wisdom of the Kuy community, who have cared for elephants since their ancestors time.

During the Buddhist Lent Festival, Surin Province hosts one of the most beautiful and unique traditions in Thailand: the Candle Procession and Alms Giving on Elephant Back. Held annually during the Lent period, this event perfectly combines Surins local culture, Buddhist faith, and traditional wisdom.

Surin is not only famous as the City of Elephants but also a hub of valuable local traditions. One of the highlights that attracts both Thai and international tourists is the Wedding Ceremony on Elephant Back, held alongside the Candle Procession and Alms Giving on Elephant Back every year. This ceremony blends the traditional Kuy (or Guay) wedding rituals with the deep reverence for elephants, the citys cherished animals, making the event vibrant, culturally rich, and deeply meaningful.




Elephant Ordination Festival
The worlds only ordination procession on elephant back, reflecting the roots of Kuy culture.
The Elephant Ordination Festival is one of Surins most important traditions, especially among the Kuy (Suay) ethnic group, who have a long-standing bond with elephants. Held annually in April at Ban Ta Klang, Khra Pho Subdistrict, Tha Tum District, visitors can witness the ordination ceremony on elephant back, beautifully reflecting local culture and the deep relationship between humans and elephants.




Phanom Sawai Hill Climbing Festival
Preserve Faith, Experience Culture, atop Surins Sacred Hill
In addition to elephants and local culture, Surin also hosts an important Buddhist festival: the Phanom Sawai Hill Climbing Festival. Held annually on the 15th day of the waxing moon in the 5th lunar month (around April), villagers gather to make merit, give alms, and pay respects to the sacred site atop the hill. The festival beautifully reflects the religious beliefs and way of life of the local community.




Light and Sound Show at Si Khoraphum Castle

In the lower northeastern region of Thailand, Surin Province stands out for its ancient cultural heritage, particularly Si Khoraphum Castle, one of the most complete and beautiful Khmer stone temples in the northeast. This castle also serves as the main venue for the annual light and sound show, held every March during the provinces peak tourist season. Visitors have the opportunity to experience both the architectural beauty and the historical stories up close.
