Surin Province is known not only for its elephants and local culture but also for an important annual Buddhist festivalthe Phanom Sawai Climbing Festival. It is held every year on the full moon day of the fifth lunar month, which usually falls in April.

Phanom Sawai is a low mountain located in Mueang Surin District. It is home to Phra Buddha Surinthamongkol, the largest Buddha image in the province, and the Buddhist relic stupa, a sacred site deeply revered by the people of Surin.
During the festival, large numbers of people climb the mountain on foot to make merit, listen to sermons, participate in candle-lighting ceremonies, and pay respects to the sacred sites at the summit. It is a powerful expression of Buddhist faith in northeastern Thailand.
