The Gem of Khmer Art in Surin

Located in Si Khoraphum District, Surin Province, this castle is a cultural heritage site that vividly and magnificently reflects the ancient Khmer civilization, making it one of the most outstanding examples in Thailand.






History
Si Khoraphum Castle is believed to have been built around the 17th Buddhist century.
It was influenced by Khmer art from the Baphuon and Angkor Wat periods, a time when the Khmer Empire flourished in Southeast Asia.
Later, the castle was adapted into a Hinayana Buddhist religious site, with some restorations added, while still preserving much of its original structure.




Architecture and Art
A highlight of Si Khoraphum Castle is its five sandstone prangs standing on a single laterite base. They are square-shaped and aligned along an eastwest axis, with the central prang serving as the main tower.
The lintels and decorative pillars are intricately carved with motifs such as Shiva as Nataraja, Brahma, Vishnu, and Apsaras, representing some of the most complete examples of Khmer art in Thailand. Surrounding the site is an ancient pond, believed to have been used for rituals, which beautifully reflects the castle, especially at sunset.
